Blog-happy Tokyo residents might want to make a note of a fun event taking place in early December at which they could walk off with not just a Sanyo Xacti camcorder for free, but also plenty of insight from a living, breathing Japanese video-blogging legend.
The gig is being staged at the Pink Cow bar (so, there’s booze, ok?

Next time you throw an old cellphone away, spare a thought for the engineers at Hokuto System in Japan, who have recycled their old handsets to make fully functional computers.
The result of their labors is a simple PC on a business-card-sized circuit board that they’ve dubbed the DVIEW and it is about to go on sale in Japan for an unspecified price.

Japanese researchers have come up with a rather snooty technique for detecting online pirated video content in places where it shouldn’t be. By analyzing clips for ’amateur-looking techniques’ KDDI reckons it can sort the professional stuff out from the garbage the rest of us produce.

When it comes to internet speeds, we’ve long-since consigned the humble kilobit-class connection to the dustbin, so a mathematics-based breakthrough has us wondering if megabit- and even gigabit-level connections will one day sound as quaintly archaic.
Researchers at Japan’s Tohoku University have tweaked existing protocols to enable standard fiber-optic cables to carry data at hundreds of terabits per second [Subscription link]. At that speed, full VOD movies could be downloaded almost instantaneously in their hundreds.

KDDI, the company that recently started an online service delivering DVD-quality movies to domestic customers has upped the ante to send quad-HD films down the same pipe.
Although the unnamed technology is still in the labs, KDDI R&D claims it can fit video of the same quality as the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) requires into a typical ADSL or fiber-optic internet connection.

A story like this just cries out for a headline about Mickey Mouse phone companies, but we won’t go down that road – instead we’ll point out that Disney’s new cellphone venture is bound to go down a treat when it launches in Japan next year.
With an eye on the cutesy-loving residents of Japan, Walt Disney Corporation has inked plans to begin offering its own phones and price plans next spring. The saccharine giant will not be investing the trillions of yen needed to start its own network, but will instead by piggybacking on the infrastructure of Softbank Mobile as an MVNO.
