Japanese Java Application Uses Cellphones to Stop Perverts

Friday, November 9th, 2007 |

That fine organ the Mainichi Daily News has word on a cellphone Java application intended to help women discretely ward off the wandering hands (and, presumably, other parts) of the gropers that plague Japan’s trains.

The ‘Anti Groping’ application is from a games developer known as Takahashi and is currently in the top 10 of mobile downloads. Users who feel the unwelcome intrusion of the friendly neighborhood pervert but who don’t want to make a scene on a crowded train are encouraged to activate the Java app and thrust the phone into the face of the sad freak.

Friday, November 9th, 2007 |

After Monday’s announcement by Google and the Open Handset Alliance (OHA) of their Linux-based Android platform for mobile phones there are more questions than answers about exactly what it means for the end user.

The involvement of so many of the world’s largest hardware suppliers, networks and phone manufacturers suggests that Android is destined to be the Next Big Thing in wireless. After all, if Motorola, HTC, Samsung, China Mobile, Intel and many more are already in bed with a firm like Google, the resulting bandwagon must surely be unstoppable.

Gasoline car converted to run on solar power

Friday, November 9th, 2007 |

Those clever Japanese scientists have been at it again, working hard to find answers to problems we never knew existed. This time, they’ve come up with a way to convert dirty old normal cars into clean, green electric vehicles.

The breakthrough comes to us courtesy of the Total Mobility Project, a scheme intended to prepare for the rapid aging of Japan’s population and led by the local government of Fukushima Prefecture, which lies 300km north of Tokyo.

China to Fall Short in Olympic 3G Mobile

Friday, November 9th, 2007 |

Despite China’s promise to have a 3G phone network in place by the time of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, a bluster-filled announcement made yesterday only served to underline that commercial services will not be ready in time.

The National Development and Reform Commission used a telecoms expo to attempt to reassure doubters by saying that a 3G network using the home-grown TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) standard would be up and running during the Olympics after all.
