Generally we reserve this feature for already-released consumer products, but with everyone now the proud owner of “the last gadget I’ll ever need,” we figure that we’re forced to look in a new direction for devices to collectively critique. And with the hundred-dollar-and-change OLPC XO finally in full-scale production, what better candidate to help us stray from the traditional format? Keep in mind, though, as you’re tearing the charitable unit apart, that it’s not really meant for the readers and writers of Engadget (at least not yet), and therefore you’re gonna look pretty silly suggesting Alienware-esque specs for a project whose goal is financial prudence. That being said, there are still a number of changes we can think of that would benefit the kiddies while still keeping the green plastic wonder under budget. Like, how about a keyboard with some tactility that one can actually touch type on? And while we love the philosophy behind open-source software, the sad truth is that you need to at least be familiar with Windows in the business world — and with Microsoft offering $3 basic installs to developing countries, why not let these machines dual-boot? Finally — and this one is for you conservative types over at the News Agency of Nigeria — NickNeg and friends should probably stop wasting time with those ineffective filters and simply make the machines incapable of displaying flesh tones instead.

Sony’s made no secret of its plans to give its VAIO SZ line of laptops a Santa Rosa refresh, but it looks like the company’s now let loose a few more details, including the all important word on pricing and availability. In addition to that Santa Rosa boost, these ones (dubbed the SZ6 series) all come equipped with 13.3-inch LED backlit displays, along hybrid hard drives boasting 160GB of traditional storage and 256MB of flash memory. According to Laptoping.com, a range of different pre-configured and build-to-order models are available, coming equipped with your choice of Core 2 Duo T7500, T7700 or T7250 processors, and an option of standard 120GB, 160GB, or 200GB hard drives if you’re not quite ready to hop on the hybrid bandwagon. Look for these to set you back between $2,060 and $2,700 depending on the configuration, with them apparently set to ship on August 1st.

SanDisk has just announced their new mini MP3 player - Sansa Clip. It’s the combination of Creative Zen Stone Plus (OLED Screen) and iPod Shuffle (With Clip attached to the player). It is expected to squeeze 15 hours of battery juice. Besides, it features FM Radio / Recorder functions and comes with 4 colours - Black, Blue, Red and Pink.
I was just about thinking to get the Creative Zen Stone Plus at this coming COMEX IT Show… Now I have to think twice… *sigh*

Here is an interesting LED lamp that can change color with a simple remote control, a suitable solution for those who want, from time to time, changing “tone” to his room (perhaps for special occasions…). In addition to coloring can change the brightness, you can set 4 transition effects and consumption is only 5W.
It is not just economic, but if you are interested you can order on ThinkGeek for $50.

After months of eyelash batting and heavy petting, Microvision and Motorola have officially exchanged vows. In a deal inked yesterday, Motorola has agreed to help Microvision bring their PicoP laser projection technology to market. Not a surprise really what with Microvision’s penchant for using Moto handsets in their marketing collateral. Unfortunately, the agreement looks to amount to the production of a functional prototype only for the time being. While the prospect of an 854 x 480 resolution projection is certainly titillating, we doubt our gadget vanity can withstand the extra chub and battery drain the tech would introduce on our slim, sexy handsets. Then again, the geek cred gained could offset the lack of swank. No worries, we’ve got several months (if not a couple of years) to grow up before product is ready for consumers.

RIM’s new BlackBerry 8820 may arrive sooner than the end of summer timeframe the company announced, say insiders within AT&T. Although an August release is possible, the smartphone may be ready as early as “next week” and would immediately replace the 8800 as the top-end BlackBerry in the provider’s lineup due to its addition of Wi-Fi. Sales staff would be discouraged from mentioning Wi-Fi, however, in order to encourage buyers to sign up for a more lucrative data plan.

You won’t find a press release for it, but the wait for the 12-inch, HP Compaq 2710p Tablet PC is over. Orders placed with HP today will ship July 25th or August 3rd if you opt for the $199 1xEV-DO (Verizon) Broadband module for full-on wWAN connectivity. In fact, AVING already has pics of the sleek, 3.6-pound, LED backlit convertible mucking about in the wild including this shot of it snuggled up to, and publicly mounting its docking station after a few too many celebratory champagnes.
